What to do When Visiting a Friend in the Hospital

Most of us have had times when a dear friend or loved one is in the hospital and we have not known what was helpful to do when visiting.

I got an email the other day regarding my friend who is currently hospitalized. In it, her husband explained things that visitors can talk about that feel encouraging to her. I really appreciated the insight and wanted to pass this along.

“She had a few visitors today and as they were easy and undemanding on her, I believe she was happy to have them. It gets pretty lonely in there. But the effort of keeping up your end of a conversation is just too much when you are this ill. So people who can share things happening without requiring her to respond in much detail (are most helpful). We also found she enjoyed two of her visitors discussing subjects of common interest as she listened and rested. She could drift off to sleep and back and not feel rude.”
