I think Thanksgiving is a wonderful, patriotic holiday. And it isn’t just because I love cranberry sauce. It is important for us to take a moment once in awhile to express gratitude for the blessings we enjoy as a nation. Those of you who know me know that I tend to get a little carried away with all things political, but that isn’t the whole story.
Gratitude isn’t something Christians are only supposed to put on the table one Thursday a year beside the turkey and stuffing. God’s word commands (not suggests, but commands) that we praise our Creator with thanksgiving in all things, at all times. Just a quick search of scripture turns up 110 commands to give thanks to God. If you think about it, it’s not hard to do that in just a single day…
Dear God,
Thank you for the golden sun
Giving warmth and light
As well as clouds that sometimes
Hide it from my view
Thank you for another day
Of life in your creation
Using every sense you gave me
To find beauty everywhere
Thank you for my home, my bed
The food that keeps me strong
Remind me that these blessings
Come from your own hand
Thank you for my family
Those by birth and those by faith
Who choose to walk beside me
Through the triumphs and the trials
Thank you for the autumn rains
Dropping gently through the night
[Though I wish I was asleep right now
And didn’t hear their song]
Thank you for enduring love
You gave to me so freely
Even when I didn’t know
How very much it cost
You get the idea… I won’t bore you with all 110 of my reasons for being grateful today, but maybe you could start your own list?
