Brian O’Shaughnessy has found an unusual way to create culture.
Brian participates in an adult Civil War unit that seeks to re-enact Civil War battles and situations as authentically as possible. He is also an officer of the Army of Chivalrous Christian Soldiers (ACCS), a group that strives to teach children and young people about history and God’s hand in American history by reliving it at family Civil War events. Included in this is training in Christ-like, sacrificial, chivalrous service and leadership. Young people, as well as parents, dress in period costumes representative of the Victorian era, perform battles as they learn about real life battles and sacrifices of the day, sample manners and customs of that time, eat period food, sleep outdoors, and dance Victorian dances.
Through his re-enacting and his service, Brian has learned a great deal about being a man of honor, about dependence on God, about caring for his comrades, as well as those weaker than himself, about setting a godly example, and about accepting authority and being in a position of authority.
As an officer in the ACCS, Brian is careful to be a gentleman of honor as he commands younger boys who admire and emulate him. He leads with both humor and authority. He has learned, and tries to teach others, to walk out one of his favorite quotes from one of his favorite historical figures, J.E.B. Stuart: “Trust God and fear nothing.”
